Ever feel like your own brain is a drill sergeant shouting a massive to-do list at you the second you try to relax? If you can’t watch a 30-minute TV show without folding laundry or feeling like you’re breaking the law, you are not alone.
In this episode of Next Chapter, Uncensored, Liana Rowlands tackles "The Busy Trap"—the chronic, lifelong habit of tying our self-worth to our productivity. For decades, we ran on all cylinders managing careers, households, and families because we had to. Can you actually Relax?
Speaker 1Welcome back to next chapter on Censored. I'm Liana Rowlands. Go ahead and grab your beverage of choice and sit back and relax.
Speaker 1Or wait, can you relax? Because today I want to talk to you about a condition that affects so many of us and has nothing to do with menopause. I'm talking about the chronic inability to just sit still.
Shouting on the Balcony: The Mental Drill Sergeant
Speaker 1The other morning I had some free time. I made a coffee, I went out on my balcony, and I told myself, Liana, just enjoy the quiet. But within minutes I started making that mental to-do list. I picked up my phone to look for something, and then I remembered the clutter waiting for me inside. Suddenly my brain became a drill sergeant, shouting a massive mental to-do list at me. You should be doing laundry. You should be organizing that closet. Why are you just sitting there?
Unpacking the "Busy Trap"
Speaker 1Why do I do this to myself? Why is it that when I finally get the open space I've been begging for, I feel this overwhelming guilt if I'm not constantly busy? So today we are unpacking the busy trap. If you can't watch a 30-minute TV show without folding laundry or feeling like you're breaking the law, pull up a chair and we need to talk. The truth is it's a lifelong habit. We have spent decades conditioning ourselves to believe that our value is tied to our productivity. Think about it. For years and years we have been running on all cylinders. Some of us busy raising families, some building careers, or both, managing households, and keeping everyone else's lives on track. If we weren't moving, something was falling apart. We wore busyness like a badge of honor because we had to.
The Treadmill of Productivity
Speaker 1But now my kids are grown, the chapter has changed, and I finally have the time to just be. Yet my brain is still stuck on that old treadmill. I've been running for so long that when I finally step off, the stillness feels completely unnatural. I feel guilty for resting because I'm treating retirement or this new phase of life with the same emergency energy I used in my 30s and forties. But the emergency is over. So how do we actually do it? How do we practice learning to sit
How to Talk Back to the Guilt
Speaker 1still?
Speaker 1For me, it starts right back out on that balcony. When the drill sergeant in my head starts shouting about the laundry or the clutter inside, I have to literally talk back to it. I have to say, the laundry can wait. The clutter isn't going anywhere. And right now, my only job is to drink this coffee. It feels incredibly awkward at first. You might sit there for five minutes feeling like you're breaking some unspoken rule. But just like any lifelong habit, you have to break it one small moment at a time. We have to retrain our brains to understand that rest isn't simply something we have to earn after a long day of chores or work. Rest is allowed simply because we are
This Week’s "Balcony Challenge"
Speaker 1here.
Speaker 1So my challenge for you this week is to find your own version of that balcony. When that urge to get up and be busy hits you, and it will, trust me, I want you to take a deep breath, stay right where you are, and remind yourself that the world will keep spinning if you just sit still.
